IIPES, Souda Bay Host Ambassador in Crete

07/28/2008 - On July 28, the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Vienna, Ambassador Greg Schulte, visited Athens for consultations on Iran and its nuclear ambitions. “The goal of the United States, a goal we share with Greece, is to reach a diplomatic settlement,” he told officials, academics, and journalists.

07/25/2008 - Mosaiko.gr, the U.S. Embassy’s youth-oriented website, sponsored a conference entitled “The Free Press Phenomenon” for publishers, editors, and journalists of the Greek free press. Former Editor-in-Chief of the Village Voice, Donald Forst, and Publisher and General Manager of AM New York, Terry Jimenez, were the keynote speakers.

NSA Souda Bay Helps Fight Wildfires on Crete
07/23/2008 - On July 23, the U.S. Naval Support Activity (NSA) responded to a request for assistance from local authorities and dispatched 21 firefighters and 5 emergency vehicles along with two Seabees and other personnel to help fight fires near the airport in Chania, Crete.

07/22/2008 - On July 22, Ambassador Speckhard hosted a reception in honor of a delegation from the University of California Davis, including Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef, along with representatives of the University of Athens and leaders in agriculture, including master wine-maker Yannis Boutaris.

A Long Tradition of Education
06/18/2008 - Ambassador Speckhard hosted a reception in honor of the trustees of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens (1881) and the Gennadius Library (1926), with many Greek government representatives in attendance. The two institutions offer the largest open research library facilities in Greece.
