International Roma Day

On the International Roma Day, April 8, Ambassador Daniel Speckhard visited a Romani school and camp in Aspropyrgos, Western Attica, along with Nomarch Aristeidis Arkoudeas and Mayor Nikolaos Meletiou.  "I think you have the right approach here through education.  It's the answer to the problem," the Ambassador said after speaking with the teachers and students.  “In the United States, we are very strict in enforcing that children go to school, no matter where they are from," he added.

This year represents the 18th commemoration of International Roma Day.  The United States remains committed to improving and protecting the human rights of Roma through the work of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.  The plight of the Roma world-wide and in Greece is covered in the U.S. State Department’s annual International Human Rights report.  Greek Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos also made a statement of support on behalf of the Greek government.
