Replanting Mount Pendeli

Embassy volunteers helped replant Mount Penteli outside Athens on March 2 in another event organized by the local Independent Reforestation Movement with the support of “Plant Your Roots in Greece,” a non-profit group based in Chicago, Illinois. The volunteers included some two dozen American diplomats and their families as well as members of the Embassy’s Marine Security Guard Detachment.

For the new trees to get the rain water they need to survive in Greece, they must be planted in the late fall, winter, or early spring. About 2,500 trees were available for volunteers to plant this particular Sunday. Greece’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture Kiltides was the guest of honor at a similar Independent Reforestation Movement event in late January, at which Deputy Chief of Mission Thomas M. Countryman represented the United States.
