Local Day Care Center Gets a Facelift
05/10/08 - On May 10, U.S. Embassy Athens, the local chapter of Daughters of Penelope, and Habitat for Humanity pooled their resources to paint the fence of Penelopean Day Care Center for low and no-income families in Nea Ionia.

05/09/08 - On May 9, US Forestry Service top firefighter Tom Harbour signed a formal agreement to continue an ongoing program of technical exchanges and training with the Hellenic Fire Service.

05/06/08 - On the occasion of Fulbright's 60th anniversary Dr. Richard C. Levin, President of Yale University, visited Greece for the first time and spoke to public audiences in Athens and Thessaloniki as part of the “Great Ideas” series on May 6 and 7.

04/14/08 - Ambassador Speckhard addressed the opening session of the 7th annual HealthWorld conference, sponsored by the Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce, where he noted the strong position of U.S. medical products and pharmaceuticals in Greece, and encouraged the Greek Government, and others,to continue working towards resolving the hospital debt issue.

04/01/08 - On April 1 Ambassador Speckhard attended EXPOSEC, an annual conference on Homeland And Corporate Security, at the Zappeion Megaron. The conference is organized by Symeon G. Tsomokos S.A. Many U.S. corporations were represented in the exhibits.

04-04-2006 - Another team of U.S. Forest Service experts, the third since last summer’s devastating wildfires, visited Greece from March 31 to April 3 to establish a framework for cooperation for the coming two years.

03/24/2008 - Greek actress M. Nafpliotou, playing the role of a high priestess, passed the Olympic flame to another priestess, near the Temple of Hera in Ancient Olympia on March 24. The flame for the Aug. 8-24 Beijing Olympics was lit using the sun's rays. Ambassador. Speckhard traveled to ancient Olympia to represent the U.S. at the ceremony.

First HAI Upgraded F-16 Delivered to USAF
03/20/2008 - At a March 20 ceremony Hellenic Airforce Industries handed over to the U.S. Air Force the first F-16 aircraft that had been structurally upgraded at the company’s new environmentally-friendly plant in Tanagra per recent agreements. Ambassador Daniel Speckhard and representatives of political and military authorities attended the event.

03/05/08 - On March 5, 2008 Ambassador Speckhard met with Culture Minister Liapis and exchanged views on bilateral cultural relations. Both stressed their determination to work closely together in the area of arts and culture to advance understaning between Greeks and Americans.

03/02/08 - Embassy volunteers helped replant Mount Penteli outside Athens on March 2 in another event organized by the local Independent Reforestation Movement with the support of “Plant Your Roots in Greece,” a non-profit group based in Chicago, Illinois.

Black History Month Celebration
02/27/08 - The American Corner at the Hellenic American Union in Athens held an event honoring Black History Month. An interactive lecture was given in English and Greek in which students were taught about prominent African American figures who have been essential to the civil rights movement in the United States.

Hellenic-American Medical Society Honors Ambassador
02/25/08 Ambassador joined the Hellenic American Medical Society for their annual dinner along with the Greek Minister of Health, D. Avramopoulos. Ambassador Speckhard congratulated the audience of American-educated Greek medical professionals for their efforts to stop the spread of illness.

02/14/08 - Ambassador Speckhard and his family attended the premiere of the critically acclaimed and award-winning American film “There Will Be Blood” for the benefit of the Cerebral Palsy Greece.

02/07/08 - Ambassador Speckhard arrived in Thessaloniki on February 7, his second trip to the north since taking up his duties in Greece. The two-day program, arranged by Consul General Hoyt Yee, began with a meeting with Mayor Vassilis Papageorgopoulos. The Ambassador then called on Minister Margaritis Tzimas.
