Ambassador Ries Opens Exhibit at the Benaki Museum
November 13, 2006 - U.S. Ambassador to Greece Charles P. Ries joined several others to open an exhibit at the New Benaki Museum on Monday night. The exhibit, "The Ancient Agora and the Art of Antiquity," will display many of de Jong's watercolors and drawings publicly for the first time. As the Ambassador stressed in his remarks, the exhibit is an excellent example of the "soft" side of international relations: Piet de Jong was an acclaimed British artist and architect who collaborated with the American School of Classical Studies for several years on a series of watercolors and drawings of Greek archaeological sites. His works will also be explored in a forthcoming book by the University of California Professor and ASCS Scholar, John K. Papadopoulos. The exhibit runs from November 15, 2006 - January 1, 2007.
