U.S. Support for Greece Continues

U.S. solidarity and friendship with Greece has been steadfast throughout the devastating fires in the Peloponnese and Attica. President Bush, Secretary of State Rice, Deputy Secretary of State Negroponte, Under Secretary Fore, and the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires in Athens, Tom Countryman, have spoken of American support to a number of Greek, Greek-American, and international media outlets. The current level of U.S. government funding for urgent humanitarian needs, next steps in Greece's recovery, and longer-term preventative measures stands at $1.9 million. Part of this assistance was a team led by the top American firefighter from the U.S. Forest Service and USAID disaster relief experts, who began consultations with the Greek government and an exchange of technical expertise last week.
