Marathon and Hopkinton, Massachusetts: Twin Cities, Twin Races

On November 4, athletes from around the world came to Greece to run the Athens Classic Marathon. To celebrate the event, the Hopkinton Athletic Association donated an exhibit of photographs from the Boston Marathon to the Marathon Museum. Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Tom Countryman delivered remarks at the opening, saying “A museum like this one is to celebrate champions,” and the exhibit “speaks to the very democratic nature of running, and especially of marathon running.” Hopkinton is the starting point for the Boston Marathon and sister city to Marathon, Greece. Both cities proudly display statues of Stylianos Kyriakides, whose unlikely 1946 Boston Marathon victory attracted massive American support for Greece.
