U.S. Government Working in Partnership to Help Haiti

Athens (January 20, 2010) -- As part of one of the largest rescue and relief missions in memory, the United States Government  has partnered with the government of Haiti, international partners and non-governmental organizations to provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Haiti.  There are major challenges as much of the country’s human and physical infrastructure was devastated.  Through combined international efforts, food, water, medical supplies, and other essential aid is flowing into the country and relief workers are working around the clock to distribute it to the people who need it most.  The U.S. is supporting the UN peacekeeping mission which has the primary responsibility for security.

The Haitian Government is operating under the most difficult of circumstances and is driving relief and recovery efforts as much as possible.  As part of a broad international partnership, which includes many European partners including Greece, the United States is consulting and coordinating closely with Haitian authorities, the United Nations, and the international community.  So far, the total the United States Government has provided $130,864,571 in foreign assistance.  In addition, we are providing military assistance to include relief transportation, doctors, medical equipment and services and support for the UN and relief agencies to secure the distribution network so that the assistance is for the benefit of all.

As a long time partner and friend, the United States will continue to assist the people and government of Haiti in every way we can.  Our commitment has been and will continue to be long term.
