The Universe Provides: The Biography of Alice Walker
Athens (February 19, 2009) -- The U.S. Embassy in Athens and the U.S. Consulate in Thessaloniki are pleased to present a series of lectures by American journalist, author, and biographer Evelyn C. White during Black History Month 2009. She is the biographer of Alice Walker, author of the Pulitzer prize winning novel The Color Purple, also an Oscar-nominated film directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Oprah Winfrey.
White will appear at two free, public events in Athens and before invited guests in Thessaloniki. On February 24 at the Hellenic American Union, White will lecture at 19:00 on The Universe Provides: Alice Walker, Abundance, and the Art of Biography. She will be introduced by Adrianne Kalfopoulou, a poet and English literature professor who is Director of the Undergraduate Programs at the Hellenic American University. On February 25, White will appear at the Arts Center at the American Community School of Athens at 19:00, where she will be introduced by Yvette Jarvis, a former City of Athens council member, and Simos Dimas, president of the board of the Arts Center.
In Thessaloniki on February 23, White will deliver a lecture at Anatolia College and address the Aristotle University English Department, where she will be introduced by
Dr. Domna Pastourmatzi. Both of these events are for invited guests only, as are lectures in Athens with Panteion University students at the U.S. Embassy Information Resource Center.
White is a 1985 graduate of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and has written and edited books on African-American women. A former reporter for The San Francisco Chronicle, her articles, essays and reviews have also appeared in such publications, as The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Arizona Republic, The Seattle Times, The Vancouver Sun, The Globe and Mail, The Philadelphia Inquirer and Smithsonian, Essence, and Ms. magazines.
