U.S. Ambassador on Shooting Incident Outside Residence

Athens (February 4, 2009) -- Today a shooting incident outside the U.S. Ambassador's residence resulted in injuries to a local contract guard employed by Brinks Hellas, who is now undergoing surgery at the Naval Hospital in Athens.

"I want to express my sympathy for what this young guard and his family are going through and wish him a speedy recovery," said Ambassador Daniel V. Speckhard.

The Ambassador spoke with Minister of Interior Prokopis Pavlopoulos by telephone earlier today about the incident.  The Minister likewise expressed his sympathy, and his commitment to conduct a thorough investigation.

The U.S. Embassy in Athens remains open and is operating normally.
