U.S. Embassy Honors Susan G. Komen for the Cure
Athens (September 28, 2009) -- On Friday, September 25, 2009, Ambassador Speckhard hosted a reception at his residence in honor of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Panhellenic Association of Women with Breast Cancer “Alma Zois,” and the Ormylia Foundation, Center for Disease Prevention and Medical Research “Panagia Philanthropini.”
Hala Moddelmog, President and CEO of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Kleopatra Gavriilidou, Chairman of Alma Zois, and renowned actress Pemy Zouni for Ormylia Foundation spoke about breast cancer and its devastating effects in order to raise awareness for efforts in support of its treatment and its cure. According to Hala Moddelmog “if you are a survivor it is important to talk about it; it’s one of the key things and it’s one of the reasons we are here today.”
“With over 25 dedicated years of service, touching millions of lives each year all over the world, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is at the helm of the mission to eradicate breast cancer. It is truly remarkable how large Susan G. Komen for the Cure has grown over the last few decades. It began as a promise between two sisters and grew to become a global community of over 2.5 million survivors, with a common goal, to fight this faceless enemy,” Ambassador Speckhard stated.
The reception was attended by leaders of the business and health community, doctors and researchers who deal with breast cancer and government officials and politicians. Ambassador Speckhard and over 130 embassy employees, family and friends participated in the Greece Race for the Cure® on Sunday, September 27, 2009.
