U.S. AMBASSADOR HOSTS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S MONTH EVENT

(Athens, March 27, 2008)  Some 50 of Greece’s most accomplished women from the worlds of diplomacy, business, and the arts and culture joined U.S. Ambassador
Daniel V. Speckhard, his wife Dr. Anne Speckhard, and their daughter Leah for a luncheon in honor of International Women's Month on March 26.  Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis was the guest of honor.

“Today is to celebrate you, to recognize you and commend you as Greek women for all you have contributed to your country and to us in the broader international community,” the Ambassador told the distinguished gathering.  “I hope we can work together, Greeks and Americans, on some of the challenges facing women all over the world.”

Foreign Minister Bakoyannis noted that Greece will soon, in the coming months, host a forum on “Women’s Empowerment” focused on the Middle East.  This initiative was announced at the September 28, 2007 meeting of the Women Leaders’ Working Group headed by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik.
