Olympic Torch Lighting Ceremony in Ancient Olympia

Greek actress Maria Nafpliotou, playing the role of a high priestess, passed the Olympic flame to another priestess, near the Temple of Hera in Ancient Olympia on March 24, 2008. The flame for the Aug. 8-24 Beijing Olympics was lit using the sun's rays. Ambassador Daniel V. Speckhard traveled to ancient Olympia to represent the United States at the ceremony.

"We thank Greece for once again sending the Olympic flame out to the world," the Ambassador said. "For nearly 3,000 years, the Olympic Games have symbolized the values of peace and freedom. In this spirit, we continue to emphasize to China’s leaders, this year's Olympic hosts, the importance of universal human rights, and to ask that they engage in dialogue with the Dalai Lama of Tibet."
