Fulbright Recognizes 2009 Scholars and Donors

The 61st annual awards ceremony for Greek and American Fulbright scholars and donors was co-hosted by the U.S. Ambassador Speckhard and Executive Director of Fulbright Foundation in Greece Artemis Zenetou at the U.S. Ambassador&rsquos Residence, Jefferson House, on June 23.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Dora Bakoyiannis delivered remarks alongside the Ambassador.   “Through its outstanding work, the Fulbright program has contributed to the strong foundation of Hellenic-American friendship and partnership,” she said.  Afterwards, the Ambassador presented certificates to the 33 Greek recipients of the 2009 prestigious scholarships, the majority of the 52 grants made this year.
Over 250 people attended the event.  Among them were Fulbright alumni, donors, Greek government officials, family and friends.  Fulbright scholarships are sponsored by the U.S. government and are awarded to graduate students, academics and artists to enhance educational and cultural ties.  Over 4,500 scholarships have been awarded to Greek and American scholars since the program’s inception in 1948 in Greece.
Greece hosts the oldest Fulbright program in Europe and the second oldest in the world.
