Deborah A. McCarthy
Deborah A. McCarthy, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, assumed the position Deputy Chief of Mission of the United States Embassy Athens on July 26, 2008. Previously, she served at the U.S. Department of State as Special Coordinator for Venezuelan Affairs (2006-2008), Senior Advisor for Counter Terrorism in the Bureau for Western Hemisphere Affairs (2004-2006) and as Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (2002-2004).
Ms. McCarthy was Consul General in Montreal, Canada (2001-2002), Deputy Chief of Mission in Managua, Nicaragua (1998-2001), Economic Counselor in Paris, France (1996-1998) and in Port au Prince, Haiti (1991-1993). Other assignments include serving on the State Department’s NAFTA Task Force, as Desk Officer for Guatemala, a Financial Economist at the U.S. Mission in Rome and in the U.S. Department of Treasury.
Ms. McCarthy received both an M.A. in Economics and an M.S. in Foreign Service from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Before joining the Foreign Service in 1981, she worked at Chase Manhattan Bank in New York as a corporate marketing and loan officer responsible for Venezuela and Colombia. She speaks Spanish, French, and Italian and has one daughter, Natalia (born: 1992).
