Currency Regulations
January 2012
There is no limit to the amount of declared currency a tourist can take out or bring into Greece. However, currency in all forms (cash, traveler’s checks, and checks) equal to or exceeding €10,000 (appx. $13,400) must be declared at entry / exit from Greece at the Greek customs offices.
You may bring into or take out of the U.S, including by mail, as much money as you wish. However, if it is more than $10,000, you will need to report it to the U.S. Customs. The penalties for non-compliance can be severe.
In order to minimize taxation, non-residents of Greece who maintain accounts in Greek banks must provide proof of their residence outside of Greece. A statement from the Greek Consulate in the country of residence is required. The American Embassy in Athens cannot provide this document.
