Ambassador Tours the Ark
February 11, 2008
U.S. Ambassador to Greece Daniel Speckhard was invited to tour the Ark (‘Kivotos’ in Greek), a center for impoverished immigrant children in Kolonos on February 11th. The Ambassador praised the efforts of the volunteers in “helping children to develop, to encourage their education and to provide additional assistance, particularly to the immigrant community so that they can help become a productive part of the community.” The Ark helps immigrant children assimilate to their new home by helping them learn the Greek language, tutoring them in their studies, and providing a healthy environment to play after school. They also care for the mothers of many of these children, who are often abandoned. Ambassador Speckhard spent time with the children, and distributed books and candy as gifts from the Embassy.
