Great Ideas
 For its 60th anniversary, the Fulbright Foundation in Greece introduces the “Great Ideas” series in support of educational and cultural connections between Greece and the United States, and organized with the support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, the U.S. Embassy in Athens, and the U.S. Consulate in Thessaloniki.

Embassy Shares Holiday Cheer with Kids in Greece
 U.S. Embassy officers traveled to American Corners in Sparti, Athens, and Piraeus to share a special holiday presentation, called“Celebrating the Holiday Season in the U.S," with elementary school kids.

 Every year, U.S. Embassy employees go to the Ark, or Kivotos, in Athens to celebrate a traditional American family holiday, Thanksgiving.

Greek and American Dignitaries Visit the USS Harry S. Truman
 While transiting the Mediterranean Sea with its escort of U.S. Navy ships on November 28, the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Harry S. Truman was host to sixteen Greek dignitaries led by Deputy Minister of Defense Ioannis Plakiotakis, as well as to new U.S. Ambassador Daniel V. Speckhard.

Jazzing It Up for Education
 On Monday, November 19, Deputy Chief of Mission Thomas M. Countryman welcomed New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra and Director Arturo O’Farrill to Greece. The band played packed concerts in Thessaloniki and in Athens to benefit the American Farm School in Thessaloniki.

 On Sunday, November 18, U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman and U.S. Ambassador to Greece Daniel Speckhard traveled to the Greek-Turkish border for the inauguration ceremony of the Turkey-Greece-Italy natural gas inter-connector.

Veterans Day: A Time of Remembrance, Honor
 On November 11, Deputy Chief of Mission Thomas M. Countryman spoke at the U.S. Retirees Association Veterans Day celebration hosted by the American College in Greece in honor of veterans from Greece, America, and all over the world. Veterans Day became a federal holiday in 1971 to honor our war veterans and give thanks for peace.

Summer Institute for Youth: Scholarship Opportunity! Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellow 2008
 The U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce a scholarship opportunity for a Greek student, aged 15-19 years, to be a Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellow for a three-and-one-half week program in the U.S. in the summer of 2008.

Marathon and Hopkinton, Massachusetts: Twin Cities, Twin Races
 On November 4, athletes from around the world came to Greece to run the Athens Classic Marathon. To celebrate the event, the Hopkinton Athletic Association donated an exhibit of photographs from the Boston Marathon to the Marathon Museum.

U.S. Promotes Eco-Friendly Alternative Crop for Greek Tobacco Farmers
 On October 17, a Greek-U.S. public-private partnership (PPP) in Thessaloniki held a press conference to announce the initial results of a one-year study on the cultivation and commercial exploitation of an alternative crop called “kenaf” that can be used to produce a wide range of eco-friendly products ranging from paper to car parts.

Second U.S. Wildfire Expert Team Visits Greece
 From October 14–27, a Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team, composed of U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) experts, is visiting Greece to assist with recovery efforts from this summer’s tragic wildfires and help with flood prevention planning.

 World-famous hip hop and break dance group HaviKoro will be performing and offering dance workshops in Athens, Sparta, and Thessaloniki from October 8 – 12, sponsored in part by the U.S. Embassy and Mosaiko.gr.

 Fulbrighters, media professors, artists, authors and cultural web-site publishers joined the Embassy Athens editors of Mosaiko.gr, for a "working happy hour" at the Hard Rock Café on September 24. Mosaiko.gr is Embassy Athens' newest web-site designed for a youth audience and featuring cultural topics.

 Greece has been selected as a candidate for the Visa Waiver Program. Following the letter from Secretary of State Rice nominating Greece for the program, the next step is a formal technical review of Greece's eligibility by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Historical Ship Visit Kindles New Friendships
 In early May, seven NATO ships docked at Tourla port on the island of Mykonos. The ships were led by flagship USS Roosevelt, but there were ships from Greece, Italy, England, Spain, and Turkey as well.
